6.9 quake hits Pacific near Fiji; no tsunami expected

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake shook the Pacific Ocean near Fiji shortly before 8 a.m. local time Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but no tsunami is expected.
The quake — centered about 88 miles northeast of the island of Ndoi — was about 260 miles deep, the USGS said.
Because of the quake's depth, no tsunami was expected, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
"Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," said the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Fiji is an archipelago about 3,100 miles southwest of Hawaii.
