I love a good sound smackdown. But trying to pick one
super standout Bluetooth speaker from everything you see lining store
shelves today is next to impossible. It doesn't matter if you're a
country fan, a rock buff or a Bieber believer, these gadgets have come
far in a short amount of time, and there are a ton of awesome options to
pump out your beats wirelessly.
It was a painstaking process, but
I've finally narrowed the field down to some of my very favorites to
fit budgets big and small. So ... let's do this.
If
you don't have much cash to spend, your options are a little bit more
limited , but that's OK. You're not looking for anything too flashy
anyway — you just want something that looks good and sounds modern,
right? OontZ makes the pint-sized Angle speaker ($39.99)
just for people like you. It's compact but puts out some good sound,
especially for the rock-bottom price. Its battery can kick out music for
12 hours on a single charge, and if you buy enough of them you can
daisy-chain them for even bigger sound.
If you have a bit more to spend and want something that will catch the eye of passersby, Jawbone's Mini Jambox ($129.99)
has the style thing on lockdown. The sound output isn't enough to get
you slapped with a noise ordinance violation, but it's certainly loud
enough to annoy your parents (as is the case in my house … ahem … I'm
talking to you, teenager daughter), if that's what you're going for. The
thing I love most about the Mini is that its shape makes it easy to
slip into your bag before you head out. On top of that it looks cool,
comes in nine colors with varying designs, and did I mention it looks
cool? I did? OK, good.
Don't eat it! Phew, that was a close one. The Beats Pill ($199.99)
is aptly named and kicks out fantastic sound, but it's definitely not
edible. Beats is all about big sound, and this relatively small speaker
is impressive when it comes to powerful bass and crisp high notes. It
also comes in all kinds of modern colors and if you want some solid
music hardware to carry between rooms or sit on your desk while you do
some work, it's hard to beat. (Get it … beat…)
Portability isn't a strong suit of the JBL Pulse ($199.95)
— it's pretty big and bulky, and isn't anywhere near what I'd call
compact — but once you see this thing light up, you probably won't care.
It performs well with most music types, and high notes sound great, but
it could use a little help with its delivery of the deep notes. It
doesn't sound bad by any means, but the Beats Pill outperforms it at the
same price. However, what the Pill doesn't do is act as a piece of
electronic art while cranking out tunes. The Pulse, well, pulses with
all manner of colorful light patterns based on your song choice, and
it's ideal for a party atmosphere. Definitely one of the most unique
speakers available right now, and for a totally reasonable price. Disco
party, anyone?
I've
shown you speakers ranging in price from $40 to $200, and spending
anything more on a single Bluetooth speaker isn't something I would
necessarily recommend. However, the high end does deliver big. . Most
of us already know anything from Bose is going to be great. Sure, you
pay more for the name, but I've never, ever been disappointed by the
sound quality that name and dollar amount deliver. Also in this high
end: The Samsung DA-E750 ($699.99)
doesn't have a fancy name like the rest of the speakers on our list,
but it is by far the most luxurious and expensive speaker/dock combo to
come along in some time. It's not made of aluminum or plastic, but of
high-grade wood with a cherrywood finish. It looks like a piece of
expensive furniture and the addition of an old fashioned tube-style
amplifier makes it feel like a cherished antique. If you feel like
dropping some serious cash on a wireless speaker, look no further.
Here's
the bottom line: All of these Bluetooth speakers have good design,
great audio, and loud-enough playback. When it comes to the best ways to
jam today, Bluetooth wireless speakers totally bring it. If you're
looking for other specifics, such as waterproof, ultra-portable, sporty,
or solar, there are a great many options for you as well. In a few
short years, Bluetooth wireless speakers have become a true mainstream
must-have. If you don't have one in your household yet, there's a good
chance you will, and soon.
